I had an extra function in the script take out the message() and it works

<?php
function p($target){
if (! $msg .= trim(nl2br(`ping -c5 '$target'`))) #bugfix
$msg .= "Ping failed. Host may not be active.";
echo $msg;
}

echo p($host);
?>

I have Ping disabled on my server but you can see it at
