I'm pretty sure I followed the phpbb instructions right (chmoding the config file etc) but I get this from the install.php page
phpBB : Critical Error
Could not connect to the database
any help gratefully recieved

Do you get this after running the install script and entering your database information?
Also try setting the debug mode to ON (uncomment the line "define('DEBUG', 1); // Debugging on" in includes/constants.php) if it isn't already on. |

yep, I get that error message after the install procedure.
I'll try what you suggest and post back the results, but wont be till friday now..

Just check Mysql is running in your server. Also try to connect to mysql server by typing mysql on the console. Last time i got the same error mesage,it was due to mysql socket error. I corrected that and it worked like a charm.
