 Help with server htaccess

I want to add some items to my webserver but the security issue is a problem. I dont know how to setup the whole htaccess system. I am on WinXP running apachie 2.0 i have php mysql and cgi all running but i want directory password setups. Like i said before i dont know how to get them working. i haven't modified the config file as far as the htaccess goes. just addes aliais and php,cgi support and basic running settings. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help me.
