Are there any advantages between using the HTML4.01 DTD over the XHTML 1.0 (both transitional)?

If both are 100% validated will they both have the same browser compatibility?

If you read the official docs, XHTML 1.0 is just HTML 4.01 + forcing people to close all tags. no other difference.

doesn't XHTML also include dropping formatting elements (such as <b>, <font>, etc)?
