Unlike big corporations, small scale businesses cannot afford to set up large Internet infrastructure to host their own server equipments or an expert team of IT professionals to monitor and manage the server and hosted websites. Collocation hosting offers such individuals and business groups to physically house their server and related hardware at the specialized data centre of the hosting provider. Alongside secure rack space or cage to house the server machine, the dedicated facility provides high end resources such as constant professional support, dedicated and multiple connection feeds, redundant power, backup generators, robust security with round the clock surveillance and fire detection and suppression systems.

Colocation hosting is costly compared to standard web hosting techniques because the customer is required to pay for not only the server, related equipments and vital network components but also for the rack space required to house the web server. The initial investment required for colocation hosting is even higher than leasing a dedicated server from any web host.

Colocation web hosts offer is much powerful and faster multi backbone bandwidth connection. The monthly charge for internet connection is based on the amount of usage which makes it much lesser when compared to bandwidth charges of dedicated server hosting.

The server hardware and software are owned by the customer who has complete control over them and can upgrade them as required without depending on the web host. However, these can be managed by the web hosts for additional charge and the user is not required to be technically proficient nor possess team of professionals.
