A couple of months ago I asked for, and got, a money-back refund for both of my CW accounts after CW screwed up access to my subdomains ...

Sad

(details at these threads:

...however, their marketing e-mails have kept coming. I asked twice before they sent me a quick apology and removed one of my e-mail addresses from the list ("Sorry, this should have been done.")

Mailing List Policy?
However, when I asked them to remove my other e-mail address from their list (likewise, for the second time), I got the response: "You received this email because you are a FORUMS member at forums.cyberwings.com - if you do NOT wish to receive these emails, please change your email address at forums.cyberwings.com to something INVALID or remove your account completely."

Surprised

This's a pretty unenlightened mailing list policy, IMHO, and I'm fairly sure I'd have noticed if there'd been a note about signing up for a CW mailing list when I registered for their support forum. But I went back to see if it was something they might've added recently. The closest thing (and not very close, actually) is a link labeled "Cyberwings Support Forums Privacy Statement." Here's the page with the link:

Privacy Statement?

Why isn't it even close? Because at this date it doesn't go anywhere except back to the main menu page for the forums:

Where Is It?
I also tried a search, and there were two threads with people asking about and why there wasn't an actual privacy policy:

http://forums.cyberwings.com/showthread.php?s=250ea0a64b170a73f325e9e79913127d&threadid=1209&highlight=privacy

http://forums.cyberwings.com/showthread.php?s=250ea0a64b170a73f325e9e79913127d&threadid=1255&highlight=privacy

...and a third thread with someone asking about how to generate their own.

As far as I can tell, it looks like CW hasn't gotten around to coming up with one for themselves.

AFAIK, there are 3 mailing lists at CW:

- the forums one (which you can unsubscribe from by removing your forum account)
- the "Keep Updated" one (which you can unsubscribe from on the "Keep Updated" page)
- the customer one (you have to email Shawn to unsubscribe)

So the only one where I see a problem is the "customer" one...

Thanks for that, Daniel, although I'd still question CW's mailing list policy, if that's what it is.

I don't remember an automatic mailing list opt-in at any other forums I've ever registered with (and this would include at least several dozen). The ones with mailing lists have either had opt-in (or out) checkboxes on their signup forms.

But I'd have to admit most of those forums weren't for Web Hosts. Is automatic opt-in the norm in your experience?

Uhmmm... yes, it is. For example, phpBB allows you to send out mass mailings (and there's no checkbox), and I know many boards who use it (we might use it once in a while too).
