I noticed something in my webalizer logs for www.fancy-rats.co.uk that intrigued me.

One of my top referrers is www.thebodyshop.com

I always took a referrer to be a site that had a link to your site and this would certainly be consistent with the other referrers listed e.g. numerous other rat sites, google, even 4webhelp is there from when I posted the link here.

However, I can find no links on www.thebodyshop.com to my site, quite honestly why would there be. So my question is; how did they get in my list of referrers? Am I misunderstanding the meaning of referrer?

Never understood that either, as I've had the same kind of "problem".

Can anyone help?

The funny thing with the body shop is that there is a tangible relationship between them and us.

They have a section about animal testing Arrow Rats are probably one of the most popular animals to experiment on Arrow We have a site about rats.

But I really don't see the link between 4webhelp and atomic energy!

Could it be caused by staff members of these organisations browsing somehow via their the domains. I'm not sure how this would work - some kind of company portal?

BTW I've had 57 hits via the body shop

also had 5 hits from porgus.com (mobile phone customisation) Huh?

I've just had an idea: maybe it's a link from one of those related sites buttons which they have in some browsers? Because the referrers are related most of the time...

Yes, but in these cases, if you go to the site, there's no mention of your site in the HTML, so it can't be that.

Some browsers allow you to customize the user agent and referer strings etc.

Infact I had done it in perl. When requesting a URL I can choose referer I want and it uses that referer. That way some people think of gaining a few hits and ranking as they are now linked.

If you want I can add the script in the scripts section.
