Been trying to write my pages so that a natty little 16px squared icon appears in visitors' address bar and favourites menu. The code I've been using is in the head section of the page thus:
<link rel="bookmark icon" href="../favicon.ico">
I've also tried rel="shortcut icon"
I've seen a few variations on this on websites around the place, most notably, Microsoft [http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/Author/dhtml/howto/ShortcutIcon.asp]
I'm having no luck with these displaying. Sorry, I can't give you the URL as it's a password protected site.
Then I look at the code for pages I've visited that do display an icon in my brower and guess what - no sign of the code above.
I'm obviously missing something pretty fundamental here. Can anyone help me out? |

Most browsers will automatically look for a favicon at http://www.example.com/favicon.ico, which explains the lack of code.
What browser are you using? Internet Explorer does not show favicons until the page is bookmarked, and even then it may not do so (due to buggy implementation of favicons). |

Hi Daniel
I'm mostly using Firefox, though I always view my pages with IE6 and NN7 too - I have XP on my home PC and ME. at work. Firefox is a lot more consistent in picking up these icons than IE for sure, but I get no luck with that either, even when I view the pages on my machine prior to uploading.
I checked on example.com and got a message explaining that it's a domain reserved for testing documentation and the like. Couldn't see any obvious way of uploading a favicon. Any suggestons
Thanks for your help
Paul |

Sorry, example.com is to be replaced with your domain name. So if your domain name is test.com, the browser will look for the favicon at http: // www . test . com / favicon . ico |

Oh boy, it's been a tough year!
Thanks for this Daniel. You've solved the mystery. I wanted the icon to be for only part of my site, dealing with elearning. So the icon wasn't in the root folder....
Many thanks. |
